One of the most common reasons patients seek chiropractic care is due to back pain, which can be mild to debilitating. According to Harvard Health Publishing, 85% of adults see a doctor for back pain at some point in their life. When this becomes chronic, going to work, exercising and performing other daily activities can be uncomfortable or even excruciating. At Gunderman Chiropractic and Wellness Center, we’re here to help you banish your back pain. We offer a variety of comfortable and non-invasive back pain treatments beyond just spine adjustments, and our team works to find the best solution for you.

What Causes Back Pain?

Back pain feels different from person to person. Some patients describe the feeling as a burning sensation, while others describe it as a shooting or stabbing feeling. Back pain can also radiate or shoot out from other parts of the body, especially the extremities such as the leg. Resuming daily activities and moving different areas of the body while dealing with this pain can make it worse. Common conditions include:

  • Strains and sprains: Pain along the back and spine can be caused by a strain, which is an injury to the muscle and tendons, or by a sprain, which refers to the tearing or stretching of a ligament. Both injuries can cause significant pain, especially to the lower back, and are typically the result of a fall or sudden movement. These injuries are also often caused by playing sports.

  • Disc injuries: A herniated disc is a condition in which the rubbery disc in the back has slipped. This can occur in any part of the spine, but typically occurs in the lower spine. In addition to back pain, disc injuries can result in weakness or numbness in the extremities as well.

  • Chronic conditions: Symptoms of arthritis, osteoporosis, scoliosis, fibromyalgia and other chronic conditions are aches and pain throughout the body, including the back. If you have a severe chronic condition, talk to your primary care physician before seeking chiropractic treatment.

Our Treatments For Back Pain

Just like each patient is unique, there is no one solution for pain relief. We emphasize a comprehensive approach to treatment that prioritizes holistic and safe methods—this means no surgery or other drastic procedures. Your chiropractor may recommend patients try just one or a combination of treatments to find what works best for their body and their condition. That being said, our chiropractors may include one or more of the following in your treatment plan.

Chiropractic adjustments are beneficial and recommended in conjunction with most of our other treatments. An adjustment refers to the manual manipulation of a specific part of the body by a qualified chiropractor. Spine adjustments aim to restore the back to proper alignment, reduce pain and swelling and promote the body’s healing process.

Massage therapy is an effective way to treat back pain and is oftentimes combined with adjustments or other chiropractic treatments. Our certified massage therapists specialize in lymphatic massage and therapeutic massage techniques. A lymphatic massage stimulates the lymphatic system, resulting in less swelling and pain, among other benefits, while therapeutic massage techniques focus on the specific areas experiencing pain as well as alleviating stress and relaxing the body overall.

Laser therapy can be used for a variety of back injuries. By harnessing light technology, this kind of therapy can reduce pain and inflammation and promote the regeneration and healing of tissues. This kind of therapy is non-invasive and requires no downtime. At Gunderman Chiropractic and Wellness Center, our laser therapy treatments include Cold Laser Therapy/Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) and Hot Laser Therapy.

Back pain is often attributed to injured or herniated discs, or a disc that is pushed out of its normal alignment within the spinal column. Injured, herniated and ruptured discs can cause mild to severe nerve pain in the upper and lower back. During the cervical and lumbar techniques, a chiropractor gently stretches the spine while putting pressure on the vertebrae. The goal of this technique is to reduce pain, improve mobility and encourage the body to naturally heal the affected disc.

SoftWave TRT uses a small handheld device to deliver acoustic or shockwave technology directly to the pain area. This technology is used to reduce pain in the back, promote functionality and motion as well as encourage overall healing in just a few treatments.
